Australian Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka will fulfill his Swiss Davis Cup commitment against a Serbian side missing Novak Djokovic. World No.2 Djokovic withdrew from Davis play this weekend to rest after losing to Wawrinka in Melbourne.
Instead of working out this week with the team, Djokovic went skiing at home, tweeting a picture of himself shoveling snow from atop a car. But Serbian officials proved perfectly understanding as their team faces the Swiss – without Roger Federer – in Novi Sad. “Djokovic feels that he needs a pause. He is exhausted, both mentally and physically,” said captain Bogdan Obradovic.
“No one knows what he feels in this moment better than himself. Novak needs a lighter preparation that would leave him full of energy to undertake the rest of the season.”
“We all understand him and stand behind his choice. We don’t want him to get hurt or have an injury as it happened last year, so we will not want him to go beyond his limits. Novak has already showed a million times how important it is for him to play for his team.”
Serbia lost the final at home in December as the Czech Republic earned the trophy for a second year in succession. Playing for the hosts will be Dusan Lajovic, Filip Krajinovic, Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic in doubles.
