Juan Martin Del Potro must be wondering if his career will be forever jinxed. After winning the US Open title in 2009 he suffered severe right wrist problems that served to put him out of the game for almost a year. Now his ranking has risen to emulate his career high of world no.4 and he is experiencing worrying symptoms with his left wrist.
So worrying in fact that soon after his return home to Argentina from the Australian Open he flew to Minnesota for consultations with Dr. Richard Berger of the Mayo Clinic, the surgeon who successfully operated of Del Potro’s right wrist and put him on the road to recovery.
The 25 year-old from Tandil had always planned to visit the Mayo Clinic at some point after suffering intermittent pain in the left wrist for some time and he required injections before contesting the Apia International Sydney that he won immediately prior to the Australian Open.
However Del Potro has revealed he suffered far more severe pain at the beginning of the Australian Open and it worsened as he lost out to Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round at Melbourne. Therefore he made the trip to Minnesota an immediate priority.
A statement released by the player’s spokesman Jorge Viale said: “The injection and medical treatment allowed Juan Martin to play without discomfort through Sydney. He experienced severe pain in Melbourne, came back to Argentina and put his wrist to rest.
“He had planned to visit Dr. Berger sometime this year to continue with the treatment. As pain worsened, he decided to fly last night.”
