Spanish Davis Cup captain Carlos Moya fears that the former iconic allure of the Davis Cup is fading among current players, with the former world number one calling the team event a sacrifice for competitors.
“The Davis Cup is becoming almost a sacrifice for many of the top players, lots of them are not playing,” the Spaniard told dpa. “The ITF should consider why it is happening.
“The romanticism has passed,” said Moya, who will lead his team to Frankfurt the week after the end of the Australian Open for a first-round tie against Germany almost certainly without Rafael Nadal, who will instead be preparing to travel to South America for February ATP events.
“Romanticism, that is from past times. I understand the position of the players, because I’ve been in their situation,” said Moya, who played on the 2004 Spanish Davis Cup championship team.
Moya will announce his team early next week. The side is expected to be led by world number three David Ferrer.
