The Match, A Poem by Justin Chaffee
The Match
Two enter the court of a battle ring,
Knowing in the end there will be only one king
But they don’t seem to mind, because they find
Much like a sailor at sea, here on the court, they feel free
Ready to face fear, even though suffering is near,
They’ll test the limits of the mind, body, and soul,
Knowing this is what it takes for them to reach their goal
Once the match starts, momentum will shift high to low,
With no one else to rely on, just you and your foe,
Watch as they strike the ball with their racket, their weapon, and sole friend,
Back and forth, side to side, with heavy top spin as the trend
As they grow weary, the seeds of doubt begin to creep in, like an evil sin
They remind themselves to stay in the here and now
And give the ball another pow,
As they continue to bout the desire for victory roars out, like a lion washing away the doubt
Match point will be awarded soon, but not to the most talented or gifted of the night
Instead, to the one with the unbreakable spirit and grit in the fight
And they will raise their arms up in a victorious flight
But the moment, though blissful is a shooting star, a flash of light
Because the victor knows that time will call again, with another match, a new opponent to catch
But no matter the ask, they will rise to the task,
And like a master of zen, ready to reach within and do it all over again
Giving it their all, with their eye on the ball
Purpose in every swing, striving for that moment to be king.
