We are almost through the first week here at the Australian Open, now the tournament can really begin. The first week is usually reserved for nice stories, upsets and people who weren’t quite prepared for the first grand slam of the year retiring from heat exhaustion. By week two you get into the meat of the event, the true contenders have shown themselves to be well prepared and ready for the marathon that is a two week grand slam!

I had a chance to shoot the Nadal vs Monfils match from the photog pit last night, they are two of my favorite players to watch and take pics of. Both of them are so athletic and physical out there, watching it on tv just doesn’t show how hard these guys are going at out there. How hard they hit the ball, how fast they are off the mark to chase down that extra ball, and make you hit just one more shot. Catching these guys in motion and taking pics is so much fun, you always have to be ready because you don’t want to miss anything! Its a shame the Monfils drew Rafa so early, he is playing well and could have made a deeper run if in another part of the draw. After watching a lot of tennis this past week I can tell you this, if it isn’t Nadal and Djokovic in the finals I will be surprised, they are the two best players playing some amazing tennis right now!

Serena losing opens the tournament up for Azarenka and Li Na to maybe meet again in the ladies finals, I would love to see Li win since she is such a local favorite and has a great personality, which is rare these days on tour.

I must say during these grand slams with the crazy hours and tons of tennis being played watched and produced, it all starts to blend together. The days bleed into the nights and nights into days, we are a small group of people who are almost on on island together during the event. We are all experiencing the same things, meetings, matches, hotels, food, daily routines. 18 days in a row of it, the only thing that doesn’t make us go a little stir crazy is the fact that we are all in this together, and know what each other is feeling and going through. Its a mix of being tired, home sick, hot, and knowing way to many tennis related facts that we will not use again until the next grand slam rolls around. All this being said, there is no island I would rather be on, or group of people I’d rather be with for these two weeks! #ESPN
