The Australian Open is well into its second week and we found out tonight that we will have a new mens champion. As Stanislas Wawrinka took out the 3 time defending champion Novak Djokovic, in a dramatic 5 set marathon win. Stan avenged the previous 14 losses in a row to Djoker, but more notably his loss from a year ago down under that went 12-10 in the 5th. When Stan’s on, he is one of the more entertaining players to watch, ripping that one handed backhand from all over the court. He also comes off as a nice dude, never met him but I found myself rooting for him Tuesday night in Melbourne. As much as I like Djokovic, I like seeing some new guys getting a shot in the majors, and since its Wawrinka vs Berdych in the semis, one of them will have a shot at winning their first grand slam! I hope Stan can recover from the long match and beat Berdych. He is an interesting story, good player who, if he was from any other country would be talked about more and given more credit for his accomplishments, but he happens to be Swiss, and so is Roger Federer. Always having to play in the shadow of Roger, answer questions about Roger, always lose to Roger. So ya I’m rooting for Stan this tourney, and if he does get through Berdych, there’s a good chance he might see…….Roger Federer across the net from him in the final. So, Fail Better Stanley, its worked so far!
