The weekend before any grand slam is the players last chance to fine tune their games heading into the grueling 2 week test that is the Australian Open! I got a chance to watch Rafa practice this afternoon, its nice to see him back on the blue courts in Melbourne after not playing last year because of injury. The world #1 looked focused and ready for 2014, only this year he is not doing the chasing, but is the one being chased. There is a big difference when you hold the top spot, everyone is gunning for you, everyone brings their “A” game and wants to be able to say they took out the world number one! Nadal has what everyone else wants, especially Novak Djokovic whom he took the #1 ranking from in 2013. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them both in the finals of this tournament and many more in the new year. Novak has a easier draw in the bottom half than Nadal, but to me these are the two best players in the world and anytime they match up in a grand slam final, we the fans are lucky. But lets not get too far ahead our ourselves, still a long way to go before that! I think that Murray, Federer and my dude Del Potro are the 3 guys who can stop the Rafa Djoker finals matchup, and the top half of the draw has all 3 of them. Who ever comes out of the top half may be too beat up by the time the finals come around, and that works just fine for Mr Djokovic.
Nadal always has time for the fans, even after practice with his hands full he stops to sign autographs for those who support him.
You can watch the Australian Open all tournament long on the ESPN family of networks and online at ESPN3.com
