Juan Martin Del Potro, who won the 2009 US Open, had a heck of a time climbing back into the top 5 after wrist surgery took him out of major contention in 2010 and 2011, when he didn’t feel up to speed yet.
The Argentine is back in the mix now, and thinks that Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will be at the Aussie Open. Murray underwent back surgery in October and has only played one tournament since then, Doha, where he lost his second match.
The Scot himself has said he does not think he can contend for the title in Melbourne, where he has reached the final on three occasions.
Rafael Nadal returned after seven months off due to knee trouble last February and managed to win two majors and grab the No. 1 ranking.
“It’s really tough to have a fantastic comeback like Rafa,” Del Potro said. “Rafa is a great champion, a great fighter, and not many players can do the same comeback as he did last year. But Murray is still the favorite for the Grand Slam. I know he doesn’t feel 100% yet, but he needs time to feel the ball okay, to feel his body fit again. He’s very dangerous for all the players playing Murray, expecting what’s going to happen with his back or his level. But for sure he’s one of the favorites of the tournament.”
