Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki is facing a race for fitness with the start of her 2014 season already delayed as a shoulder injury forced her to withdraw from the Brisbane International at the weekend.
“I’m disappointed not to be able to play in Brisbane,” said the Dane, who had been due to start in the first round of the joint ATP-WTA event against Slovak Dominika Cibulkova. “I really wanted to start my season here, but I have to take care of my body. Hopefully with a couple of days’ rest and taking it easy, I should be fine for Sydney and Melbourne.”
The tenth-ranked player ended last season with her only title of 2013, winning Luxembourg. Wozniacki reached the fourth round at the Australian Open last January.
The Brisbane women’s field is headed by Serena Williams, who arrived in Australia after losing an exhibition on Saturday in the Thai royal costal resort of Hua Hin south of Bangkok against two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka. Azarenka is seeded second ahead of Maria Sharapova, who is making her return to tennis after a shoulder injury which kept her off court from last August.
