The aptitude of Boris Becker for some of the more mundane tasks of a head coach are being questioned as the German assumes his new role as coach for world No. 2 Novak Djokovic.
The German has already given up his job as a part-time television commentator for the BBC and has told German tabloid Bild that he would not attempt to juggle the two jobs to avoid any conflict of interest. “I can’t analyze games on television and then the next day be a coach. At this level, it is the little things that decide whether you win the tournament or finish second.”
But while commentators have questioned the appointment of Becker to the role of head coach, the German who has never coached anyone before, says he is up to the new challenge.
Queries have arisen as to whether a major personality like Becker would be willing to book practice courts, order tournament transportation and perform other mundane chores with which the six-time grand slam event winner has had little – if any – exposure to. Becker has already said he does not see himself as a hitting partner for Djokovic: “I’ll be on the court in a tracksuit and looking at the video analysis, trying to make him a better tennis player.”
Becker was onside with Team Djokovic in Marbella, Spain, in the pre-Christmas rush before his new client heads off to the Abu Dhabi exhibition starting on Thursday to begin his 2014 season. They numbered nearly ten strong in a group photograph.
Becker is expected to devote around 20 weeks per year to Djokovic on the road, with former main coach Marian Vajda filling in the rest of the season after taking a step to the background in order to reportedly spend more time with his family…. Which of course is the standard answer in this situation. We wonder why they wouldn’t be trying to get the assistance of the amazing Dusan Vemic back in that picture,he can fulfill all the needs that Boris would be weak in………. Dusan is the catalyst. He is the vermouth in the martini.
