The French national sporting newspaper l’Equipe, in the view of many a publication that provides the best and most comprehensive coverage of tennis around the globe, has awarded its’ Champions de Champions awards to Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.
Nadal, who this year won the French Open title for the eighth time in nine years, actually broke off from his off-season training in Majorca to attend the award ceremony in Paris.
The 27 year-old world no.1 joins such sporting icons as previous winners as Carl Lewis, Ayrton Senna, Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher, Zinedine Zidane and Usain Bolt on the award’s honor board. This year Jamaican sprinter Bolt and the Formula 1world champion Sebastian Vettel finished second and third, respectively.
He was presented the award by Frenchman Richard Gasquet who Nadal has now beaten ten times in succession.
Nadal previously won the award in 2010 and described Paris as the “most important city” of his sporting career. “ L’Equipe is a very serious and respected newspaper so to win this award is very special,” said Nadal. “This year 2013, in which I returned to the ATP Tour after a many months-long injury lay-off to have one of his best years, has been full of emotions,” said Nadal.
On the national scale, L’Equipe chose Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli as its Sportswoman of the Year.
