Lleyton Hewitt has no time to ponder an end to his career while still focusing on unfolding upcoming challenges. The 2002 Wimbledon winner made that clear during a flying visit to Brisbane, where he and Roger Federer will start their 2014 seasons at the end of the month at the Brisbane International.
Hewitt, 32, dropped in upon his return from an exhibition in South America and with his fitness back on track, is keen to kick-start 2014. He is glad to find Federer in the field at Brisbane starting on December 28 as the sixth-ranked Swiss competes in Queensland for the first time in his career, shaking up his pre-Australian Open schedule.
“You don’t want to play him early on but if you get into the weekend and get a crack at him that would be great,” Hewitt told local media. “He’s still one of the top players and the No. 1 seed here. He’s still a benchmark for this sport.”
Hewitt broke out in laughter when asked if the upcoming Australian Open would be his last one after playing his home major since 1997 and reaching the 2005 final. “It won’t be the last. I can’t see myself finishing at the end of the year at the European indoor tournaments. I am just going out there and enjoying it.” Hewitt has stalled in the fourth round at home in three of his past six appearances, losing in the first round in 2013.
