Former French Open winner Michael Chang has emerged from the shadows after more than a decade of retirement and will serve as advisor on a part-time basis to rising Japanese player Kei Nishikori. The ATP made the surprise announcement on its Facebook page, with the No. 17 Nishikori to benefit from the accumulated wisdom of the Chinese-American who won Roland Garros in 1989 at age 17 at the height of civil unrest in Beijing at Tianenmen square .
The report said that Chang, 41, will travel for up to 20 weeks per year with Nishikori, winner of three career titles. “Excited to announce an addition to the team. Michael Chang will join us in 2014. Dante will remain the full time coach. We have already spent the last 2 weeks working hard and are getting ready for 2014,” said the Facebook post.
Maybe Michael’s recent Hall Of Fame induction in Southern California ignited his competitive fire.
