The Dusseldorf clay event has dodged another financial bullet and will be held in May, 2014 despite the loss of sponsor PowerHorse energy drinks, officials have confirmed.
The ATP 250 event, formerly played as the World Team Cup for three decades, morphed last spring into a regular clay tournament, with the license held by former player Rainer Schuettler working closely with billionaire Ion Tiriac.
The Dusseldorf tournament will go ahead at the Rochusclub with its Eurosport television contract in place and the search for a title sponsor to be continued. “Our choice is clear. We are confident in our approach and will definitely take place (from May 18),” said tournament director Dietloff von Arnim.
“We want to keep this tournament at this wonderful location in the Grafenberg forest. The national and international TV presence is again supported by Eurosport. This is very important for our format. We have already conducted numerous (sponsor) negotiations and are confident that we will find a suitable partner, the host of the tournament is it. But we are not dependent on this happening.”
Argentine Juan Monaco won the first edition held the week before the French Open.
