* Davis Cup Final tied 1-1

Davis Cup
We wish we had something exciting to tell you.
Novak Djokovic, who opened the tie, admitted to some nerves in his first set against Radek Stepanek. He broke for 4-2 in the first set, lost the break in the ninth game, but broke again in game twelve, and never looked back, winning 7-5 6-1 6-4.
Tomas Berdych didn’t show any problems with nerves at all. He simply walked all over Dusan Lajovic, 6-3 6-4 6-3, in an hour and 54 minutes.
That leaves things tied at 1-1, just as everyone expected. The next match — the doubles — is the big one. Will that longish match against Djokovic have tired out Stepanek? And will Djokovic play doubles with Nenad Zimonjic, or will Zimonjic team with Ilja Bozoljac? All we can say is, “Stay tuned.”
The fact that things are level after day one has one important side effect: It means that the fourth match, between Berdych and Djokovic, is guaranteed to be live. And the Davis Cup points table, which is not intended to accurately rank players but rather to get them to take part, carries big rewards for winning seven or eight live matches. So there will be a lot of points on the line in that match….
Modest Proposal #79638: Instead of awarding points for the live matches, maybe they should award points only for the dead matches. That way, players are encouraged to win fast so they can get on to the matches that matter….
