Juan Del Potro swallowed a tight semi-final loss to Roger Federer to exit the World Tour Finals with the Argentine determined to give even more of a challenge to his rivals in 2014. “I think I did a great season,”said the South American who was playing Federer for the third week in a row and ended 1-2 in the confrontations at Basel, Paris Bercy and London.
The South American ranked fifth with four titles this season is hoping his ranking spot sticks, depending on results this wrap-up weekend in London. “Maybe I’ll finish in the top five after three years and a half, it’s really good see my ranking and see my name in the top positions.”
Del Potro added: “My goal was to try and play in the same level than the top guys. I’m the only player who beat all of them in this season (Djokovic and Murray at Indian Wells, Federer in Basel and Nadal in Shanghai), which means something for me. I will try to play better the grand slams.
“I did well just in Wimbledon this year, so I will try to do well in the four Grand Slam for next season. But if I still be regular for all year, could be fantastic for me.”
Del Potro said he wants to maintain the solid state of his game from the second half of this season. “The top guys don’t beat me easy, all the matches are close, but in the end they still beat me on a little difference. I have still things to improve like my volleys or my approaches to the net. But in the end they make difference mentally or physically. I will be working hard on that.”
