Novak Djokovic is riding a high as he continues to challenge Rafael Nadal for year-end world No. 1 status, with that decision coming down to results at the World Tour Finals.
The Serb kept up the chase – and gained ground – on the top-ranked Spaniard by winning the Paris Masters over David Ferrer at the weekend, the third straight title for Djokovic.
According to ATP calculations, the Serb will have to win the London event, whose final is played next Monday, in order to have a chance to dethrone Nadal after the Spaniard seized the ranking lead back a month ago. Nadal owns ten titles this season, Djokovic six.
“I’m definitely playing the best tennis this year, including the start of the year with the Australian Open and Dubai; I had a great run starting 2013,” said Djokovic. “Summer was up and down, and now again I’m playing on a very high level and have lots of confidence in myself, in my game.
“I’m in a good spot at this moment: I enjoy tennis, I enjoy competing. I have the right schedule, even though it’s going to be three weeks now in a row for me: Paris, London, and Davis Cup final. Physically it’s very demanding, but it’s not just me that is tired and has played many matches. All of the top players have had long seasons, and you just have to try to find the strength, find a way to recuperate, recover.
“Every day really matters now for me to do things properly in order to play all the matches in a high level.”
Djokovic opens his London campaign in group play with Roger Federer, whom he beat in a Paris semi-final at the weekend.
