Sofia
Singles – Final: (1) Simona Halep def. (4) Samantha Stosur 2-6 6-2 6-2
Simona Halep can’t seem to get off to an easy start these days. She must be getting really tired. On the other hand, she has the whole off season to rest….
And what a breakthrough year. Six titles: Nurnberg, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Budapest, New Haven, Moscow, and Sofia. The first three are Internationals, but New Haven and Moscow are Premier events, and Sofia is the next best thing. And she won those titles on all four different surfaces — she, not Serena Williams, can claim the year’s only surface sweep. She ended the year with a nine match winning streak. Her record at the WTA level this year is 50-17 (and, since Roland Garros, 39-6!). She ends the year at a career-high #11, with every reason to think she will go higher. If she doesn’t win some sort of Most Improved award, there is something wrong with the system….
Samantha Stosur fails to win her third title of 2013, but on the whole, she has done a lot to rescue what started as a dreadful year. Having gone only 14-10 through Roland Garros, she has gone 26-11 since. She ends the season at #18, but if she can keep up that second half pace, she could get close to the Top Ten again.
Fed Cup
We had expected substitutions on day two. But we didn’t expect that it would be the Russians substituting. They didn’t have much to substitute with. But Alexandra Panova had played for three hours the day before, so she was tired. Plus the most experienced player on the Russian side was Alisa Kleybanova, even if her form is still off and she hadn’t played on clay for two and a half years. So the Russians ran Kleybanova out to play the first reverse singles against Sara Errani.
It didn’t help. Errani reeled off a 6-1 6-1 victory to clinch the Cup. Which meant that Roberta Vinci, the other player in that day one marathon, didn’t have to play her reverse singles match; they called it off and went to the doubles. Italy’s Flavia Pennetta and Karin Knapp shouldn’t have had any trouble with Irina Khromacheva and Margarita Gasparyan — but on the other hand, they didn’t have any motivation. It took Knapp and Pennetta a set and a half to get into things — but eventually they pulled it out 4-6 6-2 10-4. That meant that Italy won its fourth Fed Cup title by a score of 4-0.
Nanjing $125K
It wasn’t much of a final. #4 seed Ayumi Morita retired with a left hamstring injury after losing the first set 6-4 to #3 Zhang Shuai. For Zhang, that means she will end the year just below the Top Fifty — maybe higher, if she does well at Taipei (where she is expected to be the #3 seed, just as here. The Taipei draw is very similar to the Nanjing draw: Kimiko Date-Krumm is #1 and Yanina Wickmayer #2, Zhang is #3 and Morita #4).
Zhang also played the doubles final, along with Yaroslava Shvedova; they lost 6-1 6-4 to Doi/Xu.
