Marin Cilic will be considering his participation in this week’s Paris Masters as “gift of the year” after suspension of his sanctions for testing positive for a banned substance. The Croatian, now ranked 47th after last playing at Wimbledon when the controversy broke over a positive test for the stimulant nikethamide, will open with a qualifier at the Bercy arena in the first round.
The Cilic affair was officially ended by a decision from Lausanné’s Court of Arbitation for Sport which cut his punishment to time already served out of the game. he is good to go starting in Paris as he tries to rebuild his career after the pause. He had originally been handed nine months before the reduction. “Being with all the players here in Paris is my gift of the year,” Cilic told Reuters. “On Monday I will get my points from Queen’s back and I’ll be 31st or 32nd in the ATP rankings.”
Cilic withdrew from Wimbledon under what he says was pressure from the ITF on his lawyers, using an injury excuse and has not played since.
