Maria Sharapova isn’t about to miss a trick in the marketing of her Sugarpova candy line, with the products now on sale in time for the made-for-marketing American “holiday” of Halloween. The non-event remains a huge money spinner even in the cash-strapped, economically challenged US, with millions spent on sweets and other pricey paraphernalia of the commercially invented festival.
Nevertheless, Russian-born Sharapova has long been wise in the ways of the consumer-driven country where she has lived for most of her life. As a result, Sugarpova is currently on sale at a 15 per cent discount in the hopes of scaring up Halloween sales.
“Things are getting spooky,” Sharapova posted on her Facebook page, quickly turning the post into an advert: “Now until Oct. 31, buy my delicious Sugarpova for 15% off with the code FALL15, also, purchase four or more flavors and get Spooky (flavored candy) for free.”
Industry sources indicate that the candy which was launched in mid-2012 is doing well in its niche market of high-end stores and boutiques, with up to 200,000 bags shipped in three months. The marketing goes on: “If you were to dress up like a Sugarpova flavor this year, which would it be,” Sharapova said. “Post an image of your costume here and we’ll give the best one 10 free bags of candy.”
The line is currently available on its website, plus retailers including Macy’s in the US., Collette in Paris, and Selfridges in London.
