Paris
Singles – Final: (1) J del Potro def. (3) R Federer 7-6(7-3) 2-6 6-4
Here was an interesting conundrum: With the Paris draw as it now stands, Roger Federer is sure to make it to London. So could he withdraw from Paris after wearing himself out this week? No — because that would cause Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to go up in the draw, and suddenly he and Richard Gasquet would be able to pass Federer, and Federer would be un-qualified! So if Federer wanted to skip Paris, his best approach was to win this and make it moot.
Unfortunately, he got off to another one of those slow starts he’s had so many of lately. Even though he managed to level the first set, he lost the tiebreak. And that meant he had to play three sets, again, and this time, he seemed to slow down in the third. And so he lost — and so, even though he should make it to London, he really needs to show up in Paris. At least he doesn’t need to go deep.
But the sad fact is, he still has only one title this year (Halle), and it looks likely that it will stay that way. He rises to #6 for the moment, but it appears almost certain he will end the year outside the Top Five.
That’s by contrast to Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro remains #5 for the moment, but he’s within 1000 points of #3 Andy Murray in the Race. He still looks like a good candidate for the year-end #4, or even #3.
Doubles – Final: Huey/Inglot def. Knowle/Marach 6-3 3-6 10-4
Maybe the idea of Huey/Inglot going for London isn’t so crazy after all.
Oh, they came in at #13 in the Race, and they still need more to enter the Top Eight. But they gained on #8 Fyrstenberg/Matkowski, and also on Murray/Peers, the other main contenders for London. And they pick up their first title of the year. A pretty good week. One more good week, and Inglot might end up as the one British player in London…. Too bad they have to face #2 seeds Peya/Soares in round two.
