Amid the repeated injuries which have continually stalled her once-promising career, German Andrea Petkovic can still take heart from countryman Tommy Haas, who went through much of the same and is now tearing up the courts at age 35.
The list of the 39th-ranked Petvokic’s physical problems includes knee, back and ankle setbacks. Nevertheless she still has managed to win two titles, albeit before her unfortunate injury run began to kick in during late 2011.
Haas has had a career peppered with physical problems, with his most recent a return to form after hip surgery several years ago. The fighting spirit of her compatriot means a lot to Petkovic. “He is a huge inspiration for me. It shows what is possible and that this ‘all is well’ can happen,” Petovic said of Haas. “He was one of the few who had more injuries and surgeries than I.”
The German called her 2013 season “a roller coaster of emotions and results. Due to the (knee) injury (from the first week of the year in Perth) , I did not have the consistency. It was super stressful, I feel more mentally stressed than ever before.
Sometimes, I wake up at night and think, ‘I’m 30 – Crap, I can only get two! , play tennis three years. ‘ Then I am relieved to see that I am only 26 and have five, six years. ” Petkovic can be proud of some progress after coming back this season from outside the top 100.
