Basel
Singles – Final: (1) J del Potro def. (3) R Federer 7-6(7-3) 2-6 6-4
Here was an interesting conundrum: With the Paris draw as it now stands, Roger Federer is sure to make it to London. So could he withdraw from Paris after wearing himself out this week? No — because that would cause Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to go up in the draw, and suddenly he and Richard Gasquet would be able to pass Federer, and Federer would be un-qualified! So if Federer wanted to skip Paris, his best approach was to win this and make it moot.
Unfortunately, he got off to another one of those slow starts he’s had so many of lately. Even though he managed to level the first set, he lost the tiebreak. And that meant he had to play three sets, again, and this time, he seemed to slow down in the third. And so he lost — and so, even though he should make it to London, he really needs to show up in Paris. At least he doesn’t need to go deep.
But the sad fact is, he still has only one title this year (Halle), and it looks likely that it will stay that way. He rises to #6 for the moment, but it appears almost certain he will end the year outside the Top Five.
That’s by contrast to Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro remains #5 for the moment, but he’s within 1000 points of #3 Andy Murray in the Race. He still looks like a good candidate for the year-end #4, or even #3.
Doubles – Final: Huey/Inglot def. Knowle/Marach 6-3 3-6 10-4
Maybe the idea of Huey/Inglot going for London isn’t so crazy after all.
Oh, they came in at #13 in the Race, and they still need more to enter the Top Eight. But they gained on #8 Fyrstenberg/Matkowski, and also on Murray/Peers, the other main contenders for London. And they pick up their first title of the year. A pretty good week. One more good week, and Inglot might end up as the one British player in London…. Too bad they have to face #2 seeds Peya/Soares in round two.
Valencia
Singles – Final: M Youzhny def. (1) D Ferrer 6-3 7-5
There really seems to be something wrong with David Ferrer these days. Half a dozen straight finals blown. And that after leading by a break in the second set. Not even the Spanish crowd could hold him together. He was broken four times.
For the moment, despite failing to defend his title, he remains #3. But his Paris title is about to come off, plus his London points. If Juan Martin del Potro is threatening to rise, Ferrer is threatening to end the year at #4 or even #5. After all, he’s still behind Andy Murray in the Race. Ferrer is 56-20 this year — but he was 37-10 through Roland Garros and is only 19-10 since. In other words, he’s producing wins only half as fast! If his 2014 continues his late 2013 pace, he might have trouble staying Top Ten.
It’s amazing to realize that Mikhail Youzhny is still alive in the Race. Oh, in practice, he hasn’t any real chance — he needs to win Paris and hope that no one raises the bar significantly. But he’s still in it. Deservedly, perhaps — this is probably the biggest title of his career, and it’s only the second time in his career that he has won two titles in a year (he also won Gstaad this year; in 2010, he won Kuala Lumpur and Munich). As a side benefit, he rises to #15 in the rankings.
Doubles – Final: (2) Peya/Soares def. (1) Bryan/Bryan 7-6(7-3) 6-7(1-7) 13-11
Now isn’t this interesting. The Bryans will be the year-end #1 — but the #2 team this year, without question, has been Peya/Soares, and here they are beating the Bryans. They now have five titles this year (Sao Paulo, Barcelona, Eastbourne, Canadian Open, Valencia). That means they earn a surface sweep (titles on clay, grass, hard, and indoor hard). And it edges them a little closer to the Bryans. Not close enough to threaten the top spot this year, or even (probably) in the first half of next. But they are at least keeping the sport from being a one-team show….
