Andy Murray is sitting on the sidelines in the frenetic closing weeks of the ATP season.
But the Scot has been anything but a silent presence as he recovers after September back surgery designed to prevent the kind of pain which kept him from playing the French Open and then compromised his US Open title defence.
While making his London recovery, the Wimbledon champion has been active on Twitter, passing along tweets on a regular basis – commentating on the new autobiography by former Manchester United coach – and fellow Scot – Alex Ferguson, giving updates on his recovery progress and pointing out highlights of various Champions League football matches taking place during his enforced absence from tennis.
Murray gave an optimistic update of his progress: “4 weeks now since I left hospital.. rehab is going well.. still haven’t picked up a racket yet.. hopefully won’t be too much longer!”
He also advised followers that he might actually crack a book to read the just published autobiography of Fergie: “I haven’t read a book for a few years but surely Fergie’s autobiography is a must read!”
To help perhaps alleviate his own boredom, Murray also tweeted a picture of himself back in school: “Blast from the past.. With my best friends from primary school.. Didn’t smile for the camera even back then!”
And his appreciate of the football was in evidence in repeated tweets: “Anyone watching the champs league on Sky get the Benfica game on for a minute! Comical stuff. Pitch is a disgrace!”
Murray also made his predictions for the final places to be filled in the season-ending World Tour Finals which he will miss in London after qualifying for the eight-man event. “Which players are making the world tour finals? I’m taking Stan, Roger and Gasquet.”
Murray is due to pick up a racquet next month and is signed for a light-hearted exhibition in the Caribbean before heading to his training base in Miami. His next step is due to the be the well-paid Abu Dhabi exhibition and reports have him also possibly asking for a wild card into Brisbane to start the ATP season, an event where Roger Federer is due to make a debut.
