Nestor And Zimonjic Will Team Up Again In 2014

The two-time Wimbledon champion doubles team of Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic will re-form for 2014 in hopes of recreating the past less-than-optimal results with other partners in 2013. “I’m playing next season with Zimonjic,” revealed the 41-year-old Nestor, only man in the game to win more than 900 doubles matches. “We’ll see how it goes.

“Of course there’s nothing permanent in doubles these days,” he joked. “But we feel it would be a great injustice if we never played again considering how well we played over three years together. We both want to see if we still have a magic.”

Nestor Zimonjic won Wimbledon in 2008-09, and also claimed the French Open in 2010. They split at the end of 2010. Nestor teamed with Max Mirnyi, winning eight titles – including two French Opens – over two seasons; Zimonjic claimed three with two different partners in 2013. Nestor and Zimonjic won Basel a year ago as they came together for old time’s sake, At this week’s edition in Switzerland Nestor is teaming with Davis Cup partner Vasek Pospisil.

ADDITIONAL NEWS

Russia’s attempt to field a good Fed Cup team for next week’s final continues to be very problematic. Ekaterina Makarova, who would be their top player, has indicated that her right wrist injury will not heal in time. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Maria Kirilenko, Elena Vesnina and Nadia Petrova have all opted out some for financial reasons, as the Russian Federation has little to no money to compensate them for their attendance. Sport-Express’ reports that captain Shamil Tarpischev asked Alisa Kleybanova, and teens Daria Gavrilova, Margarita

Gasparyan and Irina Khromacheva for the Fed Cup final, but Gavrilova may say no. Tarpischev was re-elected the Russian Tennis Federation president with all 108 votes cast. . . Victoria Azarenka had this to say on her cameo in her boyfriend Red Foo’s new video, “Let’s Get Ridiculous.” “I didn’t want to be in that video, to be honest. It’s just trying to sneak me into every scene there was, and I was supposed to be a mermaid, but I said, you are out of your mind. I’m not swimming in the water. It’s cold. What are you talking about? And then he found another scene where I could just be a stewardess, and I never really served drinks, and the glass kept sliding and I was a little nervous. It was definitely fun to see how that world works and how long it takes to shoot that whole video. And swimming with sharks? Like it’s crazy. I mean, that’s why the video is Let’s Get Ridiculous. Because it is ridiculous.” . . . Angelique Kerber on why she had such a slow start to the year: “Last year I end the season in the top 10, and of course I make the pressure to be better and better, and I think it was too much at the end that I put the pressure too high, and I was not able to control this. But after Wimbledon I was relaxed some more, because then I find my rhythm again. I was playing because I love the sport.” . . . Petra Kvitova is 0-4 against Serena Williams, but in their last match pushed her to 7-5 in the third set in a defeat at 2013 Doha and when they play in the Red Group of the WTA Championships she thinks she will have a chance. “It was really great match for my side, and I was very close to win the match but I didn’t. But it’s okay. I think that I can improve my game too, and, I think it was for the first time when I really knew that I can really play her and any chance to beat her. I don’t think that I’m really like mentally down for right now when I have her in the group. So I’m looking forward.” . . . US Davis Cup captain Jim Courier is going to ring closing bell at NASDAQ in New York on Tuesday to kick off general public ticket sales for 2014 Champion Series Tennis.
