Serena Williams quickly established superiority at the final event of the season as the top seed and world No. 1 beat German eighth seed Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1. Williams is the target of the rest of the field as the year-ender bows out in Istanbul after a three-year run and heads to Singapore in 2014.

The event looked like being a long one if the opening match was any indication. It took second seed and two-time Australian open winner Victoria Azarenka 88 minutes to secure the opening set over an injured Sara Errani before finally turning in a 7-6(4), 6-2 group victory, Errani was visited by the trainer for a calf muscle injury which looked to have first alternate Caroline Wozniacki waiting in the wings for a possible future role. But Azarenka picked up her pace in the second set to take the win.

In the final round-robin match of opening day, fifth seed and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova beat No, 3 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4.
