Roger Federer is ready to start making amends for his poor season and is determined to make a winning start at his home Swiss Indoors after winning the local trophy five times from nine finals. His showcase match against Adrian Mannarino was his first test in the fight to earn one of the last places for the year-end finals in London.
“I want to compete for London, but I’ve got to win matches to get there,” said the provisional eighth in the race for the eight-man event – increased to nine with Andy Murray not playing. “I need to approach this (goal) in the correct way. But I’m going to give everything I have to get to London.”
He said he would be putting all of his effort into Basel though: “The focus is totally on this tournament. I’ll take it step-by-step in Basel and in Paris. I’m starting to focus on the first match, I hope it goes well.”
The 32-year-old admits that it would be presumptuous to think that he could duplicate his turbo-charged end to the 2011 season where he swept every title in sight indoors during the closing weeks.
But with only one trophy in 2013, the season is shaping up as the worst in more than a decade for the 17-time grand slam event champion. “I knew my trajectory this season: Ok at the beginning, then difficult and not so bad recently. But today I feel ready so physically and mentally. In Basel, I’m playing at home. It’s an advantage which I intend to exploit.”
