Moscow
Singles – Semifinal: (5) Simona Halep def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-1
Things just keep getting better for Simona Halep, who will end this week at #14, with every reason to think she can go higher next year. Or even this year, if she wins the final and does well at Sofia. But Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ends up at #26. As of when this ended, she was still the #6 Sofia candidate, but with Caroline Wozniacki and Sabine Lisicki both threatening to earn a title and so stand ahead of her, her situation was very tenuous. The main effect of this was to give us our fifth Sofia clinch, for Elena Vesnina. The clinched players (other that Tsvetana Pironkova, who was the only player to clinch before the season began, since she was sure to get a wildcard) are Vinci, Halep, Kirilenko, Stosur, and Vesnina.
Singles – Semifinal: (7) Samantha Stosur def. (8) Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 6-4
A disappointing end (very disappointing, given that she never held in the first set) to an inconsistent season for Svetlana Kuznetsova; this means she will end the year at #21 (just possibly lower, depending on what happens at Sofia). But Samantha Stosur is truly on a tear; her ninth straight win leaves her still only #19, but she’ll be going to Sofia, and going in very good form.
Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Kudryavtseva/Rodionova def. (4) Huber/Rosolska 7-5 6-2
A tough way for Liezel Huber to finish the year — losing to players whom she used to beat, and currently without a regular partner.
Doubles – Semifinal: Kuznetsova/Stosur def. Husarova/Zakopalova 6-3 6-2
At least Svetlana Kuznetsova will get the chance to end the year with a doubles title. And whatever bothered her in singles clearly wasn’t a problem here.
Luxembourg
Singles – Semifinal: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. (3) Sabine Lisicki 6-4 6-4
This match was the contest of Sofia hopefuls; the loser would be out of the contest, with the winner needing only to take the title — from a very weak opponent — to qualify for the “other” year-end event. This means Sabine Lisicki, despite the fact that she remains at #15, is out of the contest. But Caroline Wozniacki is still alive, as our year-end status list shows:
1. SWilliams: Istanbul
2. Azarenka: Istanbul
3. Sharapova: [Istanbul]
4. ARadwanska: Istanbul
5. Li: Istanbul
6. Kvitova: Istanbul
7. Errani: Istanbul
8. Jankovic: Istanbul
9. Kerber: Istanbul
10. Wozniacki: In Sofia Contention If Wins This Week
11. Stephens: Out of contention
12. Bartoli: Out of contention
13. Vinci: Sofia Candidate #1
14. Lisicki: Out of contention
15. Halep: Sofia Candidate #2
16. Ivanovic: Out of contention
17. Suarez Navarro: Out of contention
18. Kirilenko: Sofia Candidate #3
19. Stosur: Sofia Candidate #4
20. Flipkens: Out of contention
21. Kuznetsova: Out of contention
22. Cirstea: Out of contention
23. Cibulkova: Out of contention
24. Makarova: Out of contention
25. Vesnina: Sofia Candidate #5
26. Pavlyuchenkova: Sofia Candidate #6
27. Cornet: Sofia Candidate #7
28. Hampton: Out of contention
29. Safarova: Sofia Candidate #8
30. Kanepi: Out of contention
So if Wozniacki wins Luxembourg, she will qualify for Sofia (and be the #1 seed); if she somehow manages to lose, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova gets the last Sofia spot and Roberta Vinci will be the #1 seed there.
Singles – Semifinal: Annika Beck def. Stefanie Voegele 7-5 1-0 retired
That’s two of our three matches ending in retirements! For Annika Beck, this puts her in the Top Fifty, and gives her the chance for her first title. For Stefanie Voegele, it means no Top Forty spot; we show her ending the year at #44. Unless Beck passes her, anyway, which would happen if Beck wins the title.
Doubles – Semifinal: Vogt/Wickmayer def. Hercog/Raymond 0-1, retired
Amazing how many withdrawals we see at this time of year. 23-year-old Stephanie Vogt gets a chance for her first WTA title of any kind.
