****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Moscow

Singles – Second Round: (1) R Gasquet def. E Donskoy 6-3 3-6 6-1

This was a day of upsets, and for a little while, it looked as if our #1 seed might be one of them. He survives — but it doesn’t do him any good in the race or rankings yet; this is too small to count.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) M Kukushkin def. (4) A Dolgopolov 6-4 6-4

What a crazy event! We ended up with only two seeds in the quarterfinal, and two qualifiers and two wildcards! Mikhail Kukushkin appears set to end the year back in the Top Hundred; Alexandr Dolgopolov is still near the bottom of the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: I Karlovic def. (5) D Istomin 6-3 6-7(10-12) 7-6(8-6)

This made it six seeds out before the quarterfinal. Denis Istomin remains stuck below #45. Ivo Karlovic still needs one more win to defend his points, but it looks as if his Top Hundred spot is safe.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) T Gabashvili def. D Sela 6-1 6-7(6-8) 6-1

As we said above, we have two wildcards in the quarterfinal — Gabashvili and Karen Khachanov. Gabashvili, like Mikhail Kukushkin, looks likely to reach the Top Hundred this week.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Skupski/Skupski def. (1) Mirnyi/Tecau 7-6(9-7) 6-1

This is more than embarrassing for Mirnyi/Tecau, it’s also a blow in the Race. They came in at #9, and not an especially strong #9. There is only a slight chance they will fall (they have about a 200 point lead on #10 Murray/Peers), but they really need to gain some ground. They also need to play better than they have played!

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Baluda/Kravchuk def. (4) Mertinak/Sa 6-1 4-6 10-6

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Elgin/Istomin def. Bogomolov/Sela 7-5 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Junaid/Marx def. Karlovic/Moser 7-5 6-4

Stockholm

Singles – Second Round: (1) D Ferrer def. J Sock 4-6 6-3 6-1

This is David Ferrer’s first match of the event, so maybe he struggled with the surface. But he is really having a tough time this fall. And he needs a title to earn any points!

Singles – Second Round: (2) M Raonic def. (Q) J Johansson 6-2 7-6(7-3)

Given that these two hit a combined 27 aces, it’s not much of a surprise that the match went quickly. It was still a surprisingly strong comeback for Joachim Johansson — but it’s over. Milos Raonic advances, but it’s not likely to do him any good; he needs a title to add any points at all, and even that won’t matter much. Playing this week may cost him more than it’s worth; he might have been better off saving himself for the big events.

Singles – Second Round: K de Schepper def. (4) K Anderson 7-6(7-5) 4-6 6-3

A token, perhaps, of Kevin Anderson’s rust — but it means that he will stay stuck at #20, and his faint Race chances are now gone.

Singles – Second Round: (5) E Gulbis def. I Sijsling 6-3 7-6(7-3)

The points are already starting to count for Ernests Gulbis; he is slugging it out with Andreas Seppi and Benoit Paire and maybe Grigor Dimitrov for the last two spots in the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: (7) G Dimitrov def. J Struff 6-1 6-3

Unfortunately for Grigor Dimitrov, he needs two more wins before the points start counting. So he needs a lot more if he is to rise above #27.

Singles – Second Round: F Verdasco def. J Nieminen 6-2 3-6 6-3

Jarkko Nieminen loves this tournament, but the field here is quite tough. He will fall just short of the Top Forty. Fernando Verdasco is now fifty points away from the Top Thirty — meaning that he needs a final to make it.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Qureshi/Rojer def. Brunstrom/Nieminen 6-3 6-4

Although they’re the top seeds here, Qureshi/Rojer are actually behind #3 seeds Marrero/Verdasco in the Race, so they didn’t want to concede any ground here. So far, obviously, they haven’t.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Marrero/Verdasco def. Kretschmer/Satschko 6-3 7-6(7-1)

Another small step toward London for Marrero/Verdasco, who don’t need too many more steps to qualify.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Butorac/Klaasen 5-7 6-4 10-6

Gonzalez/Lipsky don’t have much chance of qualifying for London, but they aren’t letting their faint hopes die without a fight.

Vienna

Singles – Second Round: (1) J Tsonga def. D Brands 7-5 1-6 6-3

If you read today’s Feature, you’ll note that Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one of those guys trying to strengthen his Race position this week. This is a discouraging start, given that it isn’t even enough to count. Any more wins will count, though.

Singles – Second Round: (2) T Haas def. (Q) M Mecir 7-5 7-6(8-6)

Frankly better than we expected from Miloslav Mecir. The ATP notes that he is the second instance this year of the son of a former top player scoring an ATP win. (The other was Emilio Gomez son of Andres Gomez.) It is the first ATP-level win of Mecir’s career. Tommy Haas is still at #12 in both Race and rankings — and cannot move this week.

Singles – Second Round: (3) F Fognini def. L Kubot 7-5 6-2

Any additional points will count for Fabio Fognini, but he needs a final to climb in the rankings.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) R Bemelmans def. (4) P Kohlschreiber 4-6 6-1 7-6(7-0)

Philipp Kohlschreiber really doesn’t seem to be living up to his Top 25 ranking lately. This means he will be no better than #23 next week; it might be lower. Ruben Bemelmans earns his first-ever ATP quarterfinal.

Singles – Second Round: R Haase def. (7) V Pospisil 7-6(7-3) 6-7(5-7) 6-2

Vasek Pospisil, it is clear, still needs to work on his consistency. And maybe his stamina. That gave us the unlikely sight of Jaroslav Pospisil outlasting Vasek Pospisil (since Jaroslav had yet to play when this match finished). Vasek will end up probably at or just below below #40.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) D Thiem def. (LL) J Pospisil 6-1 6-1

At least we don’t have to worry about which Pospisil is which any more…. It’s quite a week for twenty-year-old Dominic Thiem, who appears bound for a career high.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Peya/Soares def. Dlouhy/Hanley 6-2 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Levinsky/Pavic def. (2) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 6-7(2-7) 10-6

250 point events don’t matter much in doubles, but this is something of a blow to the London hopes of Fyrstenberg/Matkowski. Significant, since they’re one of the teams struggling for the last few spots in the field.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Knowle/Nestor def. Haase/Huta Galung 6-3 6-3

Men’s Race Update

Want to know what the death of the dinosaurs was like? Watch this week’s ATP Race update. It’s going to be mass extinction.

With three weeks left, we know that the #9 player in the Race will qualify for London (since Andy Murray will not play), and that there are still 1750 points available (250 at this week’s events, 500 next week, and then 1000 at Paris). Coming in, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was #9 in the Race with 3010 points. That means that anyone with 1260 or more points, and open slots, still had a theoretical chance. Which means, roughly, the Top 25.

In practical terms, of course, a lot of those guys are out of it. They aren’t playing this week (Jurgen Melzer, Mikhail Youzhny), their optional slots are too full (Andreas Seppi, Benoit Paire), they’re trying to overcome injury (Jerzy Janowicz), they have already lost this week (Kevin Anderson), they just plain aren’t going to win Paris (most of the rest of the players below #15 in the Race). The real cutoff is around #15 — and, frankly, we can probably reduce things to, at most, the top eleven contenders. We can see this by looking at the top dozen entering the week and noting the gap between #11 and #12:

1. Nadal: 11670

2. Djokovic: 9610

3. Murray: 5805

4. Ferrer: 4990

5. del Potro: 4420

6. Berdych: 3800

7. Wawrinka: 3150

8. Federer: 3145

9. Tsonga: 3010

10. Gasquet: 2960

11. Raonic: 2770

12. Haas: 2265

Observe that Haas, who is 500 points below #11 Raonic, needs to gain 750 points on Tsonga to have a shot, and that’s if Tsonga adds nothing. Anyone below that needs even more.

Officially clinched are Nadal, Djokovic, Murray (who won’t play), Ferrer, and Del Potro. Berdych will qualify soon. That leaves three slots. But note Wawrinka and Federer effectively tied — and neither of them playing this week. Tsonga is 150 points back, and he is playing. Gasquet is 50 points behind Tsonga, and playing, And Raonic is 200 points behind that. Two of those five can’t make it. And the contest is so close that we are guaranteed to have at least two, and probably three, live spots at Paris. In all likelihood, we will still have four or five contenders for three spots, with the three who do best at Paris coming out on top. That’s about all we can say at this time.

In doubles, the picture is rather funny. We need list only the top four teams to show this:

1. Bryan/Bryan: 13065

2. Peya/Soares: 6185

3. Dodig/Melo: 3775

4. Granollers/M Lopez: 3620

Thus the Bryans have more than twice the score of the #2 team, who have almost twice as many points as #3, and then everyone is bunched up. From #4 Granollers/Lopez to #8 Fyrstenberg/Matkowski is a gap of only 980 points. (Note that, in singles, the gap between #4 and #8 is twice that). The Bryans and Peya/Soares are qualified. Dodig/Melo and Granollers/Lopez look good. Below that, we’d say seven teams are in serious contention based on their scores alone: Marrero/Verdasco (3190 points), Paes/Stepanek (2990), Qureshi/Rojer (2965), Fyrstenberg/Matkowski (2640), Mirnyi/Tecau (2470), Benneteau/Zimonjic (2265), and Murray/Peers (2265). Benneteau/Zimonjic have struggled, and Mirnyi/Tecau have consistently under-performed their seedings (and suffered a ridiculous loss this week), but there are no obvious distinctions between the others.

Moscow

Singles – Second Round: (4) Ana Ivanovic def. Klara Zakopalova 6-3 6-1

Klara Zakopalova will end the year right around #35, meaning that she probably won’t be in line for an Australian Open seed. Ana Ivanovic has now defended enough points that she might stay Top Fifteen, but it isn’t sure yet.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Simona Halep def. Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, retired

Obviously a tough way for Magdalena Rybarikova to end the year, and the loss means that she will fall from #37 to #38 or lower. She’ll have a lot to do at the start of next year if she wants an Australian Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Samantha Stosur def. Alize Cornet 6-4 6-1

Still no clinch of Samantha Stosur’s Top Twenty spot, but it’s getting to be much more likely (only Svetlana Kuznetsova can catch her, and Kuznetsova needs at least a final). Alize Cornet will probably be #27, meaning that a Sofia spot is likely but not yet (by our rough calculation) guaranteed.

Singles – Second Round: Daniela Hantuchova def. (Q) Vesna Dolonc 3-6 6-4 6-4

This lets Daniela Hantuchova defend almost all her points, and will likely let her keep the #33 ranking she came in with, but she needs at least two more wins to go any higher.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Husarova/Zakopalova def. (1) Hantuchova/Vesnina 7-5, retired

Perhaps not too surprising, given what Hantuchova went through in singles. But probably not how Elena Vesnina wanted to prepare for the Istanbul doubles.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Kudryavtseva/Rodionova def. Pavlyuchenkova/Shvedova 6-3 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kuznetsova/Stosur def. (3) Dushevina/Parra Santonja 6-3 6-2

Luxembourg

Singles – Second Round: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. Monica Niculescu 6-3 6-2

Caroline Wozniacki runs the risk of falling out of the Top Ten this week. And she won’t make it to Istanbul. But she is keeping her hopes of staying #10 alive — and, if she wins here, she will qualify for Sofia at least. She drops Monica Niculescu, last year’s finalist, from #43 to around #53.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Sloane Stephens def. Yvonne Meusburger 7-5 6-4

This doesn’t bring any actual points to Sloane Stephens yet, but she keeps alive her hopes of qualifying for Sofia. It looks as if Yvonne Meusburger earned just enough points to end the year in the Top Fifty. Probably, anyway; she could still be overtaken.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Sabine Lisicki def. Tereza Smitkova 6-4 6-0

This almost qualifies as free points for Sabine Lisicki, but still, they count; she is moving closer to assuring her year-end Top Fifteen spot.

Singles – Second Round: Karin Knapp def. Andrea Petkovic 7-5 7-5

Andrea Petkovic will end the year right around #40 — which isn’t bad when you consider all she has been through! Karin Knapp isn’t much behind — we show her at #41 in safe points.

Singles – Second Round: Stefanie Voegele def. Karolina Pliskova 6-1 3-6 6-3

Stefanie Voegele also looks set to finish in the Top Fifty — and she’s ahead of Meusburger, so her place looks absolutely safe.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Mladenovic/Piter def. Foretz/Hrdinova 6-4 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Dabrowski/Watson 6-1 6-4

It’s perhaps too bad Nadia Petrova didn’t get to play singles — she seems to be in pretty good form.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Vogt/Wickmayer def. Dekmeijere/McHale 7-6(7-2) 4-6 10-3
