Moscow
Dudi Sela beat unknown Russian Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 6-3 as the dual event proceeded at a leisurely pace with a field in which Richard Gasquet is the only player of note. Russian Evgeny Donskoy defeated Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 while former Russian and current Kazakh Andrey Golubev advanced over Oleksandr Nedovyesov of the Ukraine 6-2, 7-5. Paolo Lorenzi won an all-Italian battle when Filippo Volandri retired injured to hand over 3-6, 7-5, 4-1 win. Mikhail Kukushkin beat former American Alex Bogomolov of Russia 6-4, 6-1.
Stockholm
Seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov put his patchy game together enough to win into the second round in the capital as girlfriend Maria Sharapova tweeted about her week of rehab in the Scandinavian city, enthused with the autumn leaves among other wonders. Dimitrov got his job done over Romanian Marius Copil 6-3, 6-4.
Miracle qualifier Joachim Johansson, who had not played match after retiring in 2011 but once cracked the top 10, continued his hometown fairytale by winning his opening match over an embarrassed Alejandro Falla 6-1, 6-3. Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat German Nils Langer 7-6(5), 6-3 while fifth seed Ernests Gulbis ventured back to the city after once being temporarily detained for partying with the wrong sort of girls.
But the Latvian didn’t make life easy on himself as he beat Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3), a victory in which he needed a medical timeout to treat the knuckles he bloodied by slamming then against his racquet strings in moments of frustration. American Jack Sock added to the 2013 frustration of Bernard Tomic with a 6-4, 6- win while Jan-Lennard Struff beat Swede Milos Sekulic 6-3, 6-0. The hosts who once dominated tennis now have no man ranked inside the top 400 after the glandular fever illness which has taken Robin Soderling out of the sport.
Vienna
German Daniel Brands will aim for a long-odds upset after putting out local Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 7-6 (7/5). The player who stunned Roger Federer in Gstaad last July next plays top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Brands won his sixth career match in Vienna after reaching the semi-finals two years ago as a qualifier. But he has lost to Tsonga in both of their previous meetings, including the 2011 Vienna semi.
Anything but success this week for the Frenchman could spell disaster Tsonga’s hope of claiming a place in the eight-man season finale in London from November 4. Tsonga currently stands ninth on the qualifying list, but remains in with a chance as Andy Murray won’t play due to recovery from his recent back surgery. Four spots remain open after Shanghai finalist Juan Martin del Potro qualified at the weekend on the fourth position.
Seventh seed Vasek Pospisil knocked out Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (6), 6-4 as the young Canadian ranked 40th tries to finish the season in the top 32 to insure an Australian Open seeding. Pospisil spent 95 minutes on court and finished with 12 aces. He next faces Robin Haase, who defeated Serb Iliya Bozoljac 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Dominic Thiem thrilled a home crowd as he scored a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver to stop the rot for the hosts after the elimination of two Austrians during the first two days of play at the Stadthalle. The number three Austrian behind injury absentee and former champion Juergen Melzer and Haider-Maurer) now stands 5-6 in the capital.
Miloslav Mecir Jr, whose father won this event in the late 1980s, advanced out of qualifying rounds to reach the second round over Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-4.
