IMG’s Max Eisenbud has a track record of going for the sport’s very best when it comes to employing coaches for his players and the more unpredictable the appointment the better. So the sport of tennis awaits with excited anticipation for the next person to try and guide Laura Robson to the elite of women’s tennis.
The 19 year-old British left hander announced overnight that her four months experiment with Andy Murray’s former coach Miles Maclagan has come to an end after a dire run of form through the Asian swing which has seen her world ranking on the WTA computer drop to 46th position after a career high of 27 just three months ago.
Robson has failed to get on with a series of high profile coaches, such as Serena William’s current mentor Patrick Mouratoglou and the Croatian Zeljko Krajan who worked with Dinara Safina when she was world no.1. Now Eisenbud is working on the task of finding somebody who can motivate the unquestionably talented but occasionally indolent teenager.
Injury, illness and problems with wisdom teeth have all affected Robson in recent months. Plus her family is currently based in Greece after her father Andrew accepted a new job with a shipping magnate. But in a four tournament Asian swing, she suffered two first round exits and only made the quarterfinals in Guangzhou where she was defending points won by reaching the final in 2012.
“Miles and I have decided not to continue our partnership,” said Robson who recruited Maclagan through her previous agent, Abigail Tordoff of Octagon prior to the grass court season after a very unhappy chapter with the demanding Krajan.
“I want to thank Miles for stepping in on quick notice to be my coach this summer. I have great respect for him and a person and coach and look forward to continuing our friendship.
“I will take a couple weeks off to refresh my mind and body and will keep my fans updated on my coaching situation.”
Krajan, now Croatia’s Davis Cup captain and working with Marcos Baghdatis on the men’s tour, questioned Robson’s work ethic when they parted. “”The mentality is different. I did expect more from Laura but when it doesn’t go that way anymore it is not the time to stay.
“She was not mature enough to do this kind of work enough times for me. She needed to be more serious and to commit herself more. She had to do this every day, not only in the big tournaments.”
Robson has scored high profile victories over the likes of Li Na, Petra Kvitova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Venus Williams but has suffered too many defeats against supposedly lesser opponents.
