Arthur Ashe’s widow Jeanne Ashe (left) speaks to former world top 10 James Blake (right)
I wanted to share with you a really interesting new report which is airing as part of September’s edition of CNN monthly tennis show ‘Open Court’.
Recently retired pro James Blake sat down for an interview with Jeanne Ashe, the widow of tennis legend and renowned humanitarian Arthur Ashe. They talk about the growing prominence of African-American tennis players and how Arthur’s legacy is being kept alive to this day.
Below is a link to a video of the interview on CNN.com and an embed code which you can use to share the content across your own platforms. I’m also including a link to a related CNN.com write-up asking whether Ashe is the greatest black sports icon.

Here is an excerpt from the interview…
James Blake: “How do you think Arthur would feel about the state of African American tennis right now and where it’s headed?”
Jeanne Ashe: “Well, I think Arthur would be very pleased I think but he would also feel we have a long way to go but that individuals like yourself do so much to promote the game of tennis in our communities.”
“Venus and Serena, so proud of what they are both doing. Venus has her challenges yet she’s moving her life forward and still stays very involved in the game of tennis whenever she can. Serena has been I think on top form, not just in tennis but as a person during this particular US Open.”
“I think watching the growth of our community and the game of tennis today has been something I think Arthur would be proud of but I think that he would, if he were here today, promote the game of tennis on a grass roots level in our community.”
The full programme airs at the following times on CNN International
Saturday 21 September at 0830 BST / 0930 CET and 2200 BST / 2300 CET
Sunday 22 September at 1730 BST / 1830 CET
