Rafael Nadal has bowed to the current superiority of Juan Martin Del Potro, with the Spaniard tipping his on-fire Argentine rival as a candidate for future grand slam titles. The South American withstood everything Nadal could throw at him as Del Potro advanced to the final of the Shanghai Masters at the expense of the new world No. 1.
Del Potro stalled in 2009 after winning the US Open, plagued by wrist injuries and poor form. He is playing this autumn after a month off following the Open with another wrist worry. But that’s all in the past for Nadal, winner of ten titles in 2013.
“If he plays similar to this level, for sure he’s one of the biggest candidates to win a Grand Slam tournament. He’s able to do it. I’m sure he will win more,” said Nadal”, who owns 13 majors of his own compared to the all-time best 17 of Roger Federer.
The Spaniard added: “It’s true that the last three years he played well, but he didn’t arrive to this level. So it is great to see him play again at this very, very high level. At the end it is good to have players who have the potential to play at this unbelievable level.”
Del Potro qualified into the London year-end field as a result of his 6-2, 6-4 win in Shanghai. “Not many players have the chance to beat (the top players). I always believe in myself. I always believe in my game. It could be my biggest challenge of my career, getting closer to the top positions.
“They have been playing so solid for a year, and I played good tournaments. There is (still) a difference between the top guys and me. I have to be playing at this level for many, many tournaments in a row, or in important tournaments.”
