****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Shanghai

Singles – Third Round: (1) N Djokovic def. F Fognini 6-3 6-3
Still no signs that Novak Djokovic’s bad foot is actually bothering him; he wins his seventh straight match. He remains stuck at #2, and a rather distant #2, but he’s keeping Rafael Nadal on his toes. Fabio Fognini should stay at #17.

Singles – Third Round: (2) R Nadal def. C Berlocq 6-1 7-6(7-5)
Tough news for Djokovic: Rafael Nadal continues to look good, and the more points Nadal adds here, the harder for Djokovic to catch him on the indoor surfaces Nadal likes least. Nadal leaves Carlos Berlocq just below the Top Forty.

Singles – Third Round: F Mayer def. (3) D Ferrer 6-4 6-3
What a miserable Asian swing for David Ferrer. He will move past Andy Murray to take the #3 ranking, and will almost certainly end the year there, but he isn’t going to be secure there unless he can get his game together!

Singles – Third Round: (15) N Almagro def. (4) T Berdych 6-7(6-8) 6-3 7-6(7-4)
What kind of crazy hardcourt is this that David Ferrer loses on it and Nicolas Almagro wins? All we can say is that it’s a very strange event. For Tomas Berdych, this means no return to the Top Five; Juan Martin del Potro has now clinched the #5 spot, with Berdych #6. Nicolas Almagro is still at #13, but if he wins his next match, he’ll rise to #12. He probably can’t go above that this week.

Singles – Third Round: G Monfils def. (5) R Federer 6-4 6-7(5-7) 6-3
This started bad for Roger Federer, and never got much better; he was broken in his very first service game, and ended up being broken three times and firing only three aces. He will stay at #7, at least for now, but he really needed to do well here if he wanted to feel good about his chances for London. As it is, he’s likely going to have to do well at Basel and Paris if he wants to make it.

Singles – Third Round: (6) J del Potro def. (11) T Haas walkover (back)
This was something of a race for the exits; Juan Martin del Potro had already pulled out of the doubles due to illness. If he stays this lucky, he’ll have a real chance to end the year at #4; his ranking total is now almost equal to Andy Murray’s Race total (to put it another way, since Murray won’t add more points this year, del Potro could end the year at #4 by defending what he has and adding to it just slightly). Tommy Haas is likely to stay at #12, but he won’t rise and is now all but out of the Race.

Singles – Third Round: (7) J Tsonga def. (12) K Nishikori 7-6(7-5) 6-0
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, on the other hand, is asserting himself in the Race; he earns enough points to keep the #9 ranking (meaning that he will remain the top French player, with Richard Gasquet still at #2). Tsonga remains behind Federer, Gasquet, and Wawrinka in the Race, but he’s alive and the guys ahead of him are going down fast….

Singles – Third Round: (8) S Wawrinka def. (10) M Raonic 7-6(7-2) 6-4
There were a lot of contests on this day with Race significance, but this was surely the most significant of all, because both guys had Race chances. With this, Stanislas Wawrinka moves ahead of Roger Federer into the #7 Race spot, while Milos Raonic falls behind Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to #11. Wawrinka isn’t clinched, and Raonic isn’t eliminated, but Wawrinka’s chances now look very good and Raonic’s rather bad.

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Andujar/F Lopez 6-3 6-2
They may not have won the Grand Slam, but there isn’t much doubt about who is the top team in the world….

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Granollers/M Lopez def. Fleming/Marray 6-2 6-4
A good win for Granollers/Lopez, but they remain extremely inconsistent in this second half of the year.

Doubles – Second Round: Lindstedt/Pospisil def. (3) Nestor/Paes 7-5 3-6 13-11
This is pretty ironic: Daniel Nestor has played this year with both of his opponents in this match. Maybe he should have tried to hang on with Vasek Pospisil. (Things really didn’t work with Robert Lindstedt.)

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Qureshi/Rojer def. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 3-6 10-7

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Dodig/Melo def. (WC) Federer/Zhang 6-1 1-6 10-8
Roger Federer can’t have expected much while playing with a nobody, but still, a very disappointing day.

Doubles – Second Round: Huey/Inglot def. (6) Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin 7-6(7-4) 5-7 10-6

Doubles – Second Round: J Murray/Peers def. (7) Benneteau/Zimonjic 6-4 6-2
Not really much of an upset; Murray/Peers have been playing very well, and Benneteau/Zimonjic really haven’t.

Doubles – Second Round: (8) Marrero/Verdasco def. Fognini/Seppi 6-4 5-7 10-7
