Rafael Nadal (L) and Alex Corretja (R)
There looks to be another changing of the guard at the head of the Spanish Davis Cup team, with local media reporting that Alex Corretja will no longer be in charge as captain. The latest protagonist in the revolving cast of former players who had headed the all-star squad lasted for only two seasons.
The Spanish federation reportedly refused to offer Corretja him a contract extension, effectively sealing the captaincy of the two-time Roland Garros finalist. News reports indicate that former No. 1 Carlos Moya is a preferred candidate for the post which has been filled by ex-players in recent years. Corretja himself replaced 2002 French Open champion Alberto Costa as skipper.
In 2012, Corretja’s first season, Spain was beaten in the final in Prague by the Czech Republic with the visitors playing without the injured Rafael Nadal. This season, the absence of Nadal was also felt as Spain went out in the first round against Canada. The winners of five titles since 2000 regained the World Group last month by winning a playoff with the Ukraine.
