Roger Federer destroyed the long held myth that winning Grand Slam titles was a single man’s game when at long last he won that elusive French Open title just a couple of months after his wedding and now Novak Djokovic has surprised his great rivals Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray by announcing his engagement to girlfriend Jelena Ristic.
Earlier in the week, speculation started in the Serbian media that 26 year-old Djokovic had popped the question. Then the world no.1 followed the social media trend and made things official when he used his Facebook account to share the couple’s news.
Djokovic posted a photograph of Ristic kissing him on the cheek and wrote: “Getting used to introducing Jelena as my fiancé and future wife So happy!” along with. A few minutes later, he moved on to Twitter and said, “Meet my fiancé and future wife So happy! Thank you for wonderful wishes #NoleFam and friends!”
According to reports in the Serbian media, the couple will actually get married next year. They have been in a relationship for eight years since Jelena was studying Business Administration at Bocconi University in Milan. She progressed to earn a Master’s degree in Luxury Management and Services from International University of Monaco and is currently the director of the Novak Djokovic Foundation.
Jelena, who at 27 years of age is Djokovic’s senior by one year also wrote on Twitter: “Thank you all for wonderful wishes! #lucky #blessed #happy.”
Two months ago when Djokovic said in an interview with Tennis Earth: “We have been together for eight years and we are planning joint future because we really love each other very much. We provide emotional stability to each other, which helps us in our professional careers.”
Ristic also went public in Britain’s Daily Mail saying: “We spoke about the wedding, that is natural course of things. Our mutual feelings lead us to it. When we have children, they will inherit excellent genes from both sides, because my mother was Olympic champion in handball. I am very proud of Novak, no matter what he does.
“You can get very passionate when watching your boyfriend from the players’ box. We just want them to be happy. You don’t want to see them in pain. If they are not happy, neither are you.
“But I have to be careful as I don’t want to get too emotional and distract Novak. It’s about what the guys want. We don’t want them to see us get emotional. When I’m at home watching him on the TV, I get even more passionate because I know the cameras aren’t on me.”
“My job is to keep Novak calm and relaxed before his matches. We are emotional partners. The emotional support we give to each other is very important. It’s the same for me as well. He is very supportive and encouraging of the work that I do
This is certainly a week for Djokovic to remember, when the ATP World Tour’s computer clicked into action to release the latest world rankings, he became the ninth player in ATP World Tour history to spend 100 weeks as the world no.1, joining Federer, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi.
Djokovic is set to return to competitive action next week in Beijing’s China Open where Rafael Nadal will continue his campaign to dethrone the Serb from the world no.1 spot.
