Williams Sets New Serve Record In Tokyo

Venus Williams is not content with proving she is far from edging sedately towards retirement by reaching the semi-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

In Tokyo, Williams broke her own world record service speed by unleashing a delivery clocked at 129.9mph.

Venus, who turned 33 years of age in June this year but was forced to miss Wimbledon just a few days later because of a back injury, showed no signs of any discomfort against Canadian youngster Eugenie Bouchard as she aimed her sizzling effort, 0.9 mph faster than the serve she hit to set the record five years ago.

“I was just competing out there today, just fighting until the end,” insisted Venus who beat Bouchard 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in just over three hours.

“It was disappointing to lose the second set, but to win the third set is the goal, so I’m happy I did that.”

The Williams renaissance is impressive and this is the first time ever that the winner of Grand Slam titles, has reached the last four of the esteemed Tokyo event. She previously ousted world no.2 Victoria Azarenka and 13th seed Simona Halep.
