Cal Bear Day at Napa Valley Challenger  |

Today the Head Men’s Tennis Coach at UC Berkeley, Peter Wright was presented a $1,000 donation for the Cal Men’s Tennis Program from the Napa Valley Challnger, a USTA pro circuit event. “Our Napa Valley community has a lot of Cal Berkeley alumni and it’s important for us to support the local tennis programs,” Chris Arns said, Tournament Director.

Ben McLachlan is UC Berkeley’s number one player who faced Alex Kuznetsov and fell 16 46. Other happenings on the court this afternoon included Denys Molchanov retiring against Matt Reid due to a shoulder injury after the first set.

The players are eager to continue matches tomorrow. Thansai Kokkinakis, 17 years old, beat the #2 seed to qualify for the main draw and is slotted to play tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. This is his second Challenger in his career and his first main draw. When asked how the Napa Valley has affected his game, Kokkinakis said, “This is cool, I played my first qualifying match on center court and I wasn’t really focused, I was really busy looking around because there was so much open space here. I’ve had good results here, so I can’t complain.”

Following up from yesterday’s results, September 25th marks the face off of Tim Smyczeck and Daniel Cox on Center Court around 12:30 p.m. For more detailed information visit NapaValleyChallenger.com.
