Rafael Nadal is the first to admit that his ten-title performance this season has taken a lot out of him, But there is little more than a fortnight for the world No. 2 Spaniard to rest and regain strength before he is due in China for a two-week run set for early October.
Nadal went straight from winning his second US Open to Spain’s Davis Cup playoff match, where he won a singles points and combined with Marc Lopez in doubles to insure Spanish success over the Ukraine.
But after his exertions, the 27-year-old is just hoping to put his feet up for a time at home on the island of Mallorca. Nadal complained quietly that competing on Davis Cup clay at altitude in Madrid was hardly conducive to preparing for hardcourts in Beijing and Shanghai.
“Given the fatigue I am feeling, what I would like to do is rest and recuperate well physically and mentally for the Asian tour,” Nadal told Spanish media. “It’s the final sprint of the year and I am fighting for something as special as finishing as No. 1.”
The Spaniard confessed that he’s tapped out after his wildly successful season, which still has five more events to go through the year-end ATP finals in London in November. “More than swamped, right now I feel empty, a little tired of everything. In emotional terms, when you have been playing for a month and winning all your matches and then you put the cherry on the cake here you have a slump and that’s logical. But it’s nothing strange and I hope to be fine in a few days.”
