Canada to travel to Japan from January 31-February 2

September 18, 2013 – The International Tennis Federation determined Wednesday that the Miele Canadian Davis Cup team will play Japan on the road in the first round of the 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group. The official draw for the 2014 World Group was conducted Wednesday morning from the BNP Paribas offices in London. The first round ties will take place from January 31-February 2, 2014.

The tie will be played in Japan. The host city and venue will be determined at a later date by the Japanese Tennis Federation. Choice of ground was decided by lot as there is no playing history after 1969 between the two countries. Japan holds a winning 5-0 record against Canada in Davis Cup play. However, the last time the two countries played each other was in 1938 where Japan won 5-0. For this tie, Canada is the seeded team, ranked No. 7, while Japan is ranked No. 12.

“We are coming off such an incredible year where our team gained invaluable experience both in Davis Cup and individually on the Tour,” said team captain Martin Laurendeau. “We face the challenge of playing a good team on the road again, and with the Australian Open just before it will make for a lot of travel very early in the year. But we look forward to starting a new and hopefully even more successful journey for next year.”

Canada will be competing in the World Group for the third consecutive year for the first time ever after a historic run to the semifinals in 2013. After winning their first World Group tie in February against Spain, Canada went on to defeat Italy in the quarter-finals to reach the semis where they fell 3-2 this past weekend to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and the Serbians.

Japan is making their return to the World Group in 2014 after a one year absence. They defeated Colombia 3-2 in their World Group playoff tie last weekend to advance back into the Top 16.

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest annual international team competition in sport. Only 16 of the more than 130 countries that compete each year qualify for the elite World Group.

Le Canada évoluera au Japon du 31 janvier au 2 février 2014

Le 18 août 2013 – C’est mercredi matin que la Fédération internationale de tennis a procédé au tirage officiel des tableaux de la Coupe Davis, à Londres. Il a alors été déterminé que l’équipe canadienne Miele de la Coupe Davis se mesurera au Japon, sur la route, pour le premier tour, soit du 31 janvier au 2 février 2014.

La rencontre sera disputée au Japon. La ville hôte et la surface seront annoncées plus tard par la Fédération japonaise de tennis. Comme le Canada et le Japon ne se sont pas affrontés depuis 1969, le pays hôte a été déterminé par tirage au sort. Le Japon possède une fiche parfaite de cinq victoires aux dépens du Canada en Coupe Davis, mais leur dernière rencontre remonte à 1938; le Japon avait alors remporté 5-0. Tête de série de cette rencontre, le Canada occupe le 7e rang du classement de la Coupe Davis tandis que le Japon est 12e.

« Nous avons vécu une année formidable et nous avons acquis beaucoup d’expérience en Coupe Davis et sur le circuit professionnel », mentionnait le capitaine Martin Laurendeau. « Nous devrons relever le défi d’affronter une bonne équipe sur la route, encore une fois. Comme le premier tour aura lieu juste après les Internationaux d’Australie, nous devrons beaucoup voyager en début d’année. Néanmoins, nous avons déjà hâte d’amorcer une nouvelle année qui sera, nous l’espérons encore plus fantastique que celle que nous venons de vivre. »

Le Canada évoluera au sein du Groupe mondial pour une troisième année consécutive pour la toute première fois grâce à un parcours historique vers la demi-finale de 2013. Après avoir vaincu l’Espagne en février, le Canada a eu raison de l’Italie en quart de finale avant de s’incliner 3-2 face à Novak Djokovic et aux Serbes, la semaine dernière, en demi-finale.

Après une année d’absence, le Japon effectuera un retour au Groupe mondial en 2014 grâce à une victoire de 3-2 face à la Colombie lors des qualifications pour le Groupe mondial.

La Coupe Davis par BNP Paribas est la plus importante compétition sportive par équipe. Bien que plus de 130 nations participent aux épreuves de la Coupe Davis, seules 16 se qualifient chaque année pour le Groupe mondial chaque année.
