There seems to be no end to tournament movement in the United States in the past year.
First the longtime tournament in San Jose, California, waved goodbye. Then another storied men’s event in Los Angeles left.
Now another tournament in California is leaving as Octagon is taking its sanction from the WTA event in Carlsbad, California to Tokyo in 2014. The agency sees big potential in Japan in the coming years, as Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics. The WTA 700 level tournament could be played in one of the new facilities that will be constructed by the Japanese government.
But while that is great news for the WTA Asian swing — which in 2014 will feature a WTA Premier 700 level event in Tokyo beginning the week of September 15, followed by a new WTA Premier 5 in China’s growing city of Wuhan, followed by a Premier Mandatory in Beijing, and then nine days after that event concludes the WTA Championships in Singapore — it is not good news for tennis in the US.
