The on-again, off-again retirement of Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has taken another turn, with the quirky Frenchwoman now telling French media that she has definitely quit the game and will therefore not be playing in January’s Hopman Cup mixed team event as she had said she would only a fortnight ago.
By going through with her retirement, the 28-year-old is surely turning away potential millions in endorsement and other income which traditionally flows to Wimbledon winners. Bartoli retired suddenly last month after a heavy loss in Cincinnati, with many in the tennis world advising her not to make a hasty decision.
But as a player who has always danced to her own tune. Bartoli would be the one who could turn her back on the riches. “It makes no sense for me to try to prepare myself for this competition I end my career forever. I will not play this tournament in January. And I have no regrets,” she added.
Bartoli tried to explain her logic concerning the confusion and indecision over her Hopman participation. “I had committed myself in this competition before winning Wimbledon. When I announced my retirement, it was not the first thing that came to mind.
“The players in the field are mainly in the top 20, so it’s doesn’t make sense for me to play. I’ve ended my career.” Bartoli went to the US Open, starting what could presumably be a broadcast career by working with Eurosport at the final grand slam of the season.
