TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS

U. S. Open

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Victoria Azarenka def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 6-3

This was an evening match, but the crowd was sparse. Perhaps they expected a blowout. Which is what they got. Daniela Hantuchova will be #30 or #31, depending on how Flavia Pennetta does.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Flavia Pennetta def. (10) Roberta Vinci 6-4 6-1

Roberta Vinci and the Top Ten just don’t mix. She’s had several chances this summer to make it — and fell short every time. This was her big one: All she needed to do was beat long-struggling Flavia Pennetta and she would have been in. Instead, Pennetta earned an early break in the first set (or maybe we should say an early hold, since there were a lot of breaks), made it hold up, and broke in the first and third games of the second set to put things away. Jelena Jankovic will be #10, Vinci #12 — and Pennetta, who is in her first Slam semifinal, is just below a return to the Top Thirty.

Doubles – Third Round: Williams/Williams def. (11) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-1 7-6(7-3)

The Williams Sisters are a round behind everyone else, which obviously makes things tougher for them, but they seem to be rising to the challenge.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Barty/Dellacqua def. (2) Makarova/Vesnina 6-2 6-3

If Barty/Dellacqua could do as well on other surfaces as they do on hardcourts, they would probably be #1. As it is, they cost Elena Vesnina her chance to be #1. Vesnina and Makarova will stay at #4 and #5.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (5) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. (3) Petrova/Srebotnik 4-6 6-4 7-5

The Perpetual Petrova Problem returns: She just can’t seem to win Slams. Which means no #1 ranking, either. And Katarina Srebotnik won’t make the Top Five. For Andrea Hlavackova, this means the possibility of staying Top Ten, although she still has points to defend; Lucie Hradecka is still just barely Top Fifteen.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (10) Mirza/Zheng def. (4) Hsieh/Peng 6-4 7-6(7-5)

Hsieh Su-Wei didn’t have much chance to rise above her current #7; now she has none. Peng Shuai might reach #8. Sania Mirza is likely to hit the Top Fifteen; Zheng Jie is a little behind. The Top Ten now looks like this:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….7855*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 7855*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7505

4..(4) VESNINA ……….. 7440

5..(5) MAKAROVA ………..7440

6..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 6905

7..(7) HSIEH …………. 5815

8..(9) PENG ……………5476

9..(8) HLAVACKOVA ………5200*

10.(10) PESCHKE ……….. 4955

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: Spears/S Gonzalez def. (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares 6-3 6-1

Once again the Mixed rankings are indicative (they seem to work best at the U. S. Open): Mixed rankings would have left Medina Garrigues/Soares unseeded — and behind Spears/Gonzalez.

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: (7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi def. Mladenovic/Nestor 7-5 6-7(4-7) 12-10

This time, Mixed rankings failed; they would have demoted Hlavackova/Mirnyi and promoted Mladenovic/Nestor. But this is perhaps indicative of Daniel Nestor’s troubling decline. Of course, with that scoreline, it might also be luck….

Women’s Rankings Update: U. S. Open

If you’re looking for excitement… frankly, we’d recommend looking at the men. On the women’s side, there isn’t much to talk about. The Top Five is pretty well set. Serena Williams will stay #1, Victoria Azarenka #2, Maria Sharapova #3 no matter what happens from now on. And while Agnieszka Radwanska could still lose the #4 ranking to Li Na, that will happen only if Li wins the U. S. Open. Li has clinched the #5 ranking, up from #6; Sara Errani will fall from #5 to #6.

Others in the Top Ten will be Marion Bartoli, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, and Jelena Jankovic, the latter replacing Petra Kvitova.

New names in the Top Fifteen are Sloane Stephens and Carla Suarez Navarro; they replace Ana Ivanovic and Samantha Stosur (the latter now just barely clinging to the Top Twenty). There are, as of now, no new Top Twenty players. Even more surprising, there is only one new Top Thirty player; Daniela Hantuchova has taken the place of Klara Zakopalova. Flavia Pennetta could still join the Top Thirty, but she needs a final.

Hitting the Top Fifty are Pennetta (who will be #23 if she can make the final), Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and probably Karin Knapp, replacing Annika Beck, Stefanie Voegele, and Romina Oprandi.

In doubles, we entered the day with a hot contest for the #1 spot, with four different contenders, but that’s over. Errani/Vinci will keep the top spots. Errani, Vinci, Petrova, Vesnina, Makarova, Srebotnik, Hsieh, and Peng are all sure to be Top Ten (and look very likely to be the eight players at the year-end Championships, although the losses by Petrova/Srebotnik and especially Hsieh/Peng made that less certain); the last two Top Ten spots are still in the air, with Peschke, Hlavackova, Mirza, Dellacqua, and Barty among the contenders.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
