US Open - Latest News Update

epa03842666 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus hits a return to Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada during their match on the fourth day of the 2013 US Open Tennis Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, USA, 29 August 2013. The US Open runs through Monday 09 September, a 15-day schedule for the first time. EPA/ANDREW GOMBERT  |

U. S. Open

Singles – Third Round: (2) Victoria Azarenka def. (26) Alize Cornet 6-7(2-7) 6-3 6-2
We never would have guessed at this score! Maybe we just have to label this a crazy event for Alize Cornet. Consider, for instance, the fact that she added points but will fall from #28 to #29. Tough way to get ahead….

Singles – Third Round: Camila Giorgi def. (6) Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-4 6-3
The second set of this ended with Caroline Wozniacki butchering a ball to give Camila Giorgi a break. And Wozniacki never recovered. She loses her chance to rise above #8 and just might fall.

Singles – Third Round: Alison Riske def. (7) Petra Kvitova 6-3 6-0
Already the buzz is about what Alison Riske did here. And it’s probably true that she played a career match. But Petra Kvitova just can’t string together winning streaks any more. Maybe it’s just that bug she has, causing her repeated crises — something known to happen with diseases like malaria. (She ended up having the trainer out to deal with her symptoms.) Maybe it’s something else. Whatever it is, it has taken Kvitova out of the Top Ten. She’ll be no better than #11, with Jelena Jankovic our likely new #10. Riske will rise above #70.

Singles – Third Round: (10) Roberta Vinci def. Karin Knapp 6-4 6-3
Roberta Vinci still needs one more win to defend her points, but this guarantees that she will stay Top Fifteen. Karin Knapp will be around #50.

Singles – Third Round: (13) Ana Ivanovic def. Christina McHale 4-6 7-5 6-4
On the whole this seems like a good event for Christina McHale — at least she has come back to life. She did well enough to make a first return to the Top Hundred. Ana Ivanovic needs one more win to have any chance of staying Top Fifteen.

Singles – Third Round: (21) Simona Halep def. (14) Maria Kirilenko 6-1 6-0
Talk about a battle not going to the swift…. Speedy Maria Kirilenko and red-hot Simona Halep in effect were contesting the #17 ranking here — and Kirilenko definitely won’t be keeping it. Halep is on a pace that might get her to the Top Ten by this time next year.

Singles – Third Round: Flavia Pennetta def. (27) Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5 6-1
What was this, National Head Case Hunting Day? Svetlana Kuznetsova remains near the bottom of the Top Thirty; Flavia Pennetta is right behind Alison Riske, the day’s other big surprise.

Singles – Third Round: Daniela Hantuchova def. Julia Glushko 3-6 7-5 7-6(7-4)
This takes Daniela Hantuchova to about #33, but talk about earning her points the hard way!

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Makarova/Vesnina def. Cornet/Garcia 6-2 6-2

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. King/Rybarikova 6-3 3-6 6-1
We have a genuinely interesting doubles situation right now: Any of three teams (Errani/Vinci, Petrova/Srebotnik, Marakova/Vesnina) can take the top spots with a title here (with Petrova, Vesnina, or Errani and Vinci jointly being #1, as may be). Whichever team wins here gets the top spots. But can Nadia Petrova hold together to win a Slam?

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Hsieh/Peng def. Kuznetsova/Stosur 7-5 4-6 6-3
Hsieh/Peng can’t really hope to reach #1, but almost anything below that is possible. Here is how we currently show the Top Ten:
 1..(1) ERRANI .............7580*
1..(1) VINCI ............. 7580*
3..(3) PETROVA ........... 7325*
4..(4) VESNINA ........... 7220*
5..(5) MAKAROVA ...........7220*
6..(6) SREBOTNIK ......... 6725*
7..(7) HSIEH ............. 5595*
8..(9) PENG ...............5256*
9.(10) PESCHKE ........... 4955*
10.(12) GROENEFELD .........4955*

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Klemenschits/Klepac 7-5 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: Oudin/Riske def. (9) Huber/Llagostera Vives 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-1
This drops Nuria Llagostera Vives — a semifinalist last year — out of the Top Twenty, and appears to leave Liezel Huber below that mark also.

Doubles – Second Round: (10) Mirza/Zheng def. Marosi/Moulton-Levy 6-3 7-5

Doubles – Second Round: (11) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. Craybas/Vandeweghe 7-6(8-6) 6-4
And that is, presumably. a career for Jill Craybas, who never became one of the game’s elite but managed a decade and a half career based on sheer doggedness.

Doubles – Second Round: (15) Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. Barthel/Dekmeijere 7-6(7-4) 6-2
A nice secondary reward for Jelena Jankovic on the day she she probably returned to the singles Top Ten.

Doubles – Second Round: Williams/Williams def. (7) Kops-Jones/Spears 6-4 6-4
Apparently even the Williams Sisters can suffer rust. But they seem to be over it now. Kops-Jones and Spears will remain in the #12-#15 range.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Mladenovic/Nestor def. (2) Srebotnik/Zimonjic 6-1 7-6(7-3)
Definite support for mixed rankings, this — they would have made Mladenovic/Nestor the #2 seeds and demoted Srebotnik/Zimonjic to #5.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (4) Peschke/Matkowski def. Husarova/Polasek 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (5) Medina Garrigues/Soares def. Date-Krumm/Marrero 6-3 7-5

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (6) Raymond/Rojer def. Moulton-Levy/Butorac 6-3 3-6 10-7
Hard to believe Eric Butorac couldn’t find a stronger partner. He pays the price for the lack.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (7) Hlavackova/Mirnyi def. Y Chan/Lindstedt 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Barty/Peers 7-6(12-10) 7-6(7-5)
The real #1 team in mixed (as revealed by mixed rankings) marches on.
