Roger looked very good. I don’t remember his upper body looking quite so “v-shaped”. Is it just the shirt or is he training a little more. I know they say he is training his core really hard for his back. And he may have gone back to his old racket, but I think he is using different strings. I don’t remember his forehand being nearly that whippy before. It will be a better test Monday against Robredo unless he Tommy is really injured. Even if not, still probably pretty routine for Roger. He looks like he is being more aggressive. That’s what I saw in Cincinnati and it worked the first two sets there against Rafa. So there is still hope.
But the real story of tonight was Giorgi. They have to break through a couple of veterans, but one of them could very well be the story of the second week, at least as far as the women’s draw goes. If not, Azarenka will have a pretty easy time getting to the finals. Likewise Serena unless Li Na finds some “tough” pills. I don’t believe Sloane has the actual mechanics to hit with Serena and she will get pouned tomorrow unless Serena is injured. But it’s a bad idea to try to prognosticate about the women. Very hard to know what they will do. Usually I am wrong. But I will go out on a limb and say we are going to see a lot more of Giorgi.
