Mardy Fish has pulled the plug on his US Open due to his health, with the former top 10 player’s career now looking decidedly uncertain. Fish made the announcement as he cited “personal reasons” for his withdrawal. He will be missing his fourth grand slam of the season after playing a total of nine ATP matches in 2013.
His last appearance came this week in Winston-Salem, where he quit in the second round against Jarkko Nieminen in that ATP event due to heat exhaustion. Fish has barely played since his heart-scare incident in February, 2012 despite undergoing a procedure to fix an accelerated heartbeat in May,2012.
His last appearance at a major came a year ago when he withdrew before facing Roger Federer in the fourth round. “I struggled mightily during the US Open last year. So those sort of post-traumatic experiences that I’ve had – that I have now – are what I need to get over right now,” he said of his condition. “But it’s a process. It’s not an easy game. And fitness is as big a part of it as playing, and sometimes that’s trouble – spells trouble – for me.”
