A seven-week break was more than he might have wanted, but Rafael Nadal cannot complain after lifting his 25th Masters 100 title with a resounding win in Montreal at the weekend. “After Wimbledon I would have liked to have two weeks less of rest. But I had it after losing in the first round (to Belgian Steve Darcis who has not played since due to injury),” he said.
Nadal had his own plan which was apparently vetoed by doctors who wanted him to give more rest to his problem knee. Instead of competing in July, the Spaniard enjoyed some more holidays with friends and family. “I didn’t want to go seven weeks without a tennis tournament, and I wanted to avoid the feeling of losing in the Wimbledon first round. But I didn’t have the chance to play in Hamburg (last month). I had to work at home on the knee.
“But the result (in Montreal) was great. We prepared the right way and go the perfect result. I am lucky that happened this way. I feel very happy for that.”
