Federer Sold His Gift Cow

Roger Federer is a cow owner no more, with the living, breathing bovine he was presented last month upon his return to the Gstaad tournament now sold to a buyer at a cattle auction not far from Gstaad in central Switzerland.

The milk cow, named Desiree, was the second given to the Swiss player by the ATP event. A decade ago, he received Juliette from organizers in the alpine village as he arrived to play after winning his first grand slam title at Wimbledon.

But if Federer has learned anything over his past decade in tennis, it’s how to deal with a perhaps unwanted bit of livestock. The city boy was certainly amenable to the auction plan after admitting that he might have trouble finding a home for his latest living gift.

But it was Problem Solved for the Swiss as Desiree went under the auctioneer’s hammer, selling for a respectable 4,000 francs ($4,300).

But it was not the top price for an animal last weekend. Local media report that of the more than 40 animals auctioned, Federer’s milker commanded only the second-highest price, trailing a cow named Leonore, all Swiss cows have both names and small bells, which went for 5,500 francs ($5,800).
