Canadian Open

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (7) R Gasquet 6-1 6-2

No lapses for Novak Djokovic this time! And this was a rerun of last year’s final, so Richard Gasquet loses more than 10% of his points and will fall from #9 to no better than #10. It will be #11 if Milos Raonic makes the final.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) R Nadal def. (Q) M Matosevic 6-2 6-4

And so we come a little closer to restoring the proper order of the universe: Rafael Nadal moves back ahead of David Ferrer to regain the #3 ranking. And he faces Djokovic next. He can’t move higher this week, but at least it feels like old times.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (11) M Raonic def. E Gulbis 7-6(7-3) 4-6 6-4

This was every bit the battle it appeared to be. The end result is that Ernests Gulbis is still below the seeded range for the U. S. Open, although only slightly below. But Milos Raonic is up to #12, and he looks like a good bet for the final, because:

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) V Pospisil def. N Davydenko 3-0, retired

Vasek Pospisil probably didn’t deserve this — he admitted that his legs are a little sore — but give him all due credit for taking every advantage of the opportunities offered him. He now has nine straight wins (five of them in the Vancouver Challenger), and he has increased his points by about 50%. #73 coming in, he’s now just below the Top Forty. Make the final and he’s likely to get a U. S. Open seed. And we know that we’ll have a Canadian in the final, because Pospisil faces Raonic next.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (6) Lindstedt/Nestor def. (1) Bryan/Bryan 6-7(2-7) 6-3 10-5

It would seem the Bryans will have to wait a little longer to clinch the year-end #1. But it won’t be a lot longer.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (2) Granollers/M Lopez 7-5 4-6 10-7

Back to the slump for Granollers/Lopez. Which implies…

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Peya/Soares def. (7) Dodig/Melo 4-6 7-5 10-1

…that Peya/Soares will be moving a little closer to becoming the top non-Bryans in the rankings.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Fleming/A Murray def. (5) Qureshi/Rojer 6-3 7-6(7-3)

Once again we find ourselves wondering what happened to Andy Murray in singles.
