Serena Williams is hoping for a repeat of her 2011 hardcourt summer in which a title in Toronto paved the way for another US Open final a few weeks later. The world No./ 1 has the elite field almost to herself in Canada this week, with new world No. 2 Victoria Azarenka out injured and No. 3 Maria Sharapova also not quite ready for a return after hip problems.
Williams can only remember August good times from two seasons ago. “It was just such a confidence boost to win such a big tournament,” she told local media of her 2011 victory. “It was very good for my confidence and it definitely gave me the experience I needed.
“It propelled me to get to the finals at the US Open,” said Williams, 2011 finalist against Samantha Stosur who claimed her fourth trophy at Flushing Meadows last September,
But Williams has business to take care of in Canada first, as she bids for her eighth title of 2013, a run which included the French Open. “I don’t know if I’ve peaked yet, I don’t know if I’ve gotten to the top of the mountain, “said the 31-year-old. “If I am there, I want to stay there.”
